Deputy Prime Minister Hai of Vietnam and a delegation from Vietnamese energy business and political sectors visited SN Power, Statkraft and NordPool on 16th June. The purpose was to learn about the Nordic power markets and Norwegian hydropower expertise. SN Power and Statkraft have vast experience operating in Southeast Asian and deregulated power markets.
The Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Hoang Trung Hai, and a large business and political delegation from Vietnam visited Statkraft's office in Oslo Wednesday 16th June. The group was met by Christian Rynning-Tønnesen, CEO Statkraft, Stein Dale, Chairman SN Power, Tor Stokke, acting CEO SN Power and Erik Knive, EVP Southeast Asia SN Power.
The around 40 senior politicians and business executives learned about Statkraft and SN Power's operations, before they were taken on a tour of Statkrafts's trading room and the NordPool market operations floor.
"Vietnam is an interesting market for SN Power. We opened an office in Hanoi earlier this year and we are actively looking at the existing opportunities in the market. The high level meeting was therefore a good venue to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the Vietnamese market and for ideas to be exchanged," says Erik Knive. Vietnam’s Energy Master Plan aims for deregulation of the domestic power market by 2013/14. By effectively deregulating its power market, Vietnam will benefit as it will become attractive place for foreign companies with long term investment strategies to build new power plants.
"We know that to achieve 1 % GDP growth, approximately 1,3 % growth in electricity supply is needed. Many Asian countries, including Vietnam, will suffer or are suffering from energy shortage. That is why we think it is so important for the country to open its market to players who can assist in producing renewable energy to fuel sustainable economic growth," Knive continues.
SN Power has extensive experience operating in deregulated markets of emerging economies, and Statkraft has been a key driver of the deregulated Nordic power market since the early 1990’s. SN Power can use its experience and potential investment in Vietnam to positively contribute to the development of a deregulated power market in Vietnam.
