Cahua

The Cahua hydropower plant provides an average annual output of 280 GWh.

Cahua is a 43 MW run-of-river hydropower plant that provides renewable energy to the grid in Peru.


The plant 

Cahua is located 60 km upstream of the mouth of the Pativilca River in Northern Peru. The plant has been operational since 1967. Cahua was purchased by SN Power in November 2003.

Operation

Cahua S.A. is evaluating two potential Greenfield sites, upstream of the Cahua plant in the Rapay river,  with a capacity of about 200 MW. Cahua is also evaluating new methods to improve plant efficiency, including improving the sedimentation processes and implementing a modern automated maintenance system.

Sustainable Development 

The plant employs 24 staff, including two from local communities. Cahua S.A. has worked with local communities over a long period and has initiated a number of projects. These include supplying free electricity to local towns, supporting the area police, educational activities for poor children and safeguarding water purity along the River
Pativilca.
